Novo Aether is an original campaign setting created by Talonrazor. It's inspired by shows such as Firefly and Battlestar Galactica, the Commonwealth Saga of books, and the films Serenity and Starship Troopers. Players from Penny Arcade's Of Dice and Men forum and other sources roleplay characters working together aboard an independent ship, travelling between star systems, exploring the galaxy, making money, and seeking adventure.

Novo Aether's history is formed from that of present day Earth's, and its expansion out of the solar system. Most major modern-day nations, or alliances of nations, evolve into formidable galactic powers. Mankind eventually makes contact with evolutionarily different humans, and also truly alien species. On a galactic level, the name of the game is colonial expansion. Most major powers have a strong colonial program, in addition to independent worlds, native systems of various species, and corporate worlds.
