Frontier

The Frontier is a rugged place that lacks almost everything the galaxy has to offer. Most Frontier worlds are out of the ansible grid, lacking the all-important Uninet and Hive. Their culture tends to develop without the sweeping memes and changes that the galactic society absorbs. It is a dangerous place.

Frontier Politics, Economy

The Frontier is the outer-most limits of human expansion. It makes a large, slowly expanding arc in the galaxy that marks where mankind has settled. A wide patch of space that rings the human worlds, it's called the "Fringe", "Wild Space" or "Backworld". The Frontier is where the newest homes of humanity are being developed. These planets lack the amenities of the Inner and Outer Sphere worlds and have very small populations. In their infancy of terraforming, they are harsh and unforgiving worlds. Most Frontier worlds are linked by slow, small GAPTRAN gates and have to be completely self-reliant. Frontier worlds also lack ansibles, creating a total sense of isolation and independence. Those who live in the Frontier are hardy and self-reliant. They get by with very little and develop their own culture.

Most worlds are a govermental territory, settled by homestead acts, resettlement projects or colony initivates and usually ran by a military governor. These worlds have only slight resemblance of govermental control. Other Frontier planets can be private homestead worlds that are settled by private citizens and not owned by any govermental entity, instead having their own basic goverment. A few corporate worlds exist, settled by the immense wealth of the megacorps for economical reasons. Only the corporate worlds may have decent amenties or ansibles, usually other Frontier worlds offer only basic resources, usually technological stagnant.

Frontier planets are usually targets of Inferii Di and Dreji raids, causing horror stories to circulate of a Frontier planet that drops from communications. In several instances, GAPTRAN has shutdown a gate to contain the Inferii Di. Once a task force, usually dispatched by Covenant Earth, arrives on system, they find the terrible remains. An entire town or even several villages will be destroyed and thousands enslaved. These events have not helped the perception of the Frontier to sphere citizens.

Frontier Society

Fringer is often a label that 'sphere dwellers will place on those who come from the backwards, remote sectors of the Frontier. Fringers tend to be behind the times, due to lack of Uninet and Hive connection, and develop their own fashions and cultures. Here, people wear pratical, sturdy clothing like dusters, big hats and simple pants. Things are usually simply made and designed with function over form.

Music and media is often totally different then the galactic community, lacking the memes that will sweep through the interconnected sphere planets. In the Frontier, culture will develop by regionalism. The surrounding people and community have a large impact on music and art. Fringer culture is spread by word of mouth and freelancers doing a bit of fringe-running.

An important force in the Frontier is the Border Legion. The Border Legion is comprised of adventurers, patriots, mercenaries, volunteers, ex-criminals, pirates, outlaws and all others who want a little adventure, a little cash and a lot of safety. It is a militia guard, private military, police force and organized mob all in one. Made up of volunteer units from planets, adventurers and criminals with ships seeking refuge, private citizens doing a part-time job and vessels on loan, the Border Legion is the largest private armed force in the Frontier. A planet may ‘subscribe’ to the Border Legion services, which include anti-pirate sweeps, smuggling patrols and the ability to request Border Legion forces in a defensive war or blockade. The fee is usually a small amount of credits. However, there is an expectancy to provide some military units.

Frontier Planets

The United Colonies has many Colonial Territories in the Frontier that boast a much higher ratio of population then other Frontier planets. Worn as almost a badge of pride, Colonialists have an almost romantic view of the Frontier. It is often equated with the Old Earth Wild West. "Wild Space" is a popular term with UCA media. Many worlds are also Independent.
